Our first annual Staff Development Conference will be held online this year on June 9th and 10th from 1:00 PM EST to 4:30 PM EST daily. This two-day event is designed to encourage and support the professional and skill development of all CPS Staff across the global campuses.

This free conference is open to all NU CPS staff members, offering sessions that focus on navigating change, networking, AI in the workplace, and various skill-focused workshops.

Vice President of Global Safety & Chief of NUPD

Dr. Michael Davis currently serves as the Vice President of Global Safety and Chief of Police for Northeastern. Mike began his public service in 1992 with the City of Minneapolis. In 2008, Mike became the Chief of Police for the City of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota’s 6th largest and second most diverse city. During his nearly six-year tenure, Mike led the City of Brooklyn Park to the lowest levels of crime experienced in 22 years. In addition, an over 10 percentage point increase in community confidence in police service from 85% to over 95%. Mike has served as a police practice and leadership consultant since 2012 and founded MBD Innovation, a consulting consortium which serves cities, communities and public safety organizations throughout the United States. As a researcher, Mike is an authority in the dynamics of occupational stress.

Jared Auclair, PhD

Dean, College of Professional Studies

Jared Auclair serves as the Dean of the College of Professional Studies. With more than a decade of experience at Northeastern, starting first as a post-doc and most recently, Vice Provost Research Economic Development and Director of Bioinnovation, Jared is a champion of innovation and collaboration. Dr. Auclair directs the Biopharmaceutical Analysis Training Laboratory and oversees the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Center of Regulatory Excellence in Biotherapeutics. His research expertise includes analytical chemistry, protein biochemistry, and regulatory science, with a focus on biopharmaceutical development and analysis. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a PhD in Biomedical Science from the University of Massachusetts Medical.

Chief Belonging Officer & Dir, John D. O'Bryant African American Institute

As Chief Belonging Officer, Richard offers leadership and strategic guidance to cultivate a climate of belonging across Northeastern’s global university system. Richard first joined Northeastern’s faculty in 2003, assuming leadership of the John D. O’Bryant African American Institute in 2007. In this role, Richard has built a multi-generational community of students, faculty, and staff. Richard’s commitment to belonging extends beyond his work with the Institute. He has actively contributed to university initiatives, including co-chairing the Black Faculty and Staff Association, sitting on the “Many Voices, One Northeastern” climate survey planning team, and participating on the Community Development Task Force. Additionally, Richard serves as a Trustee at Roxbury Community College and Children Services of Roxbury and is a member of the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education. He continues to teach in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs and the College of Professional Studies. He is also an affiliated faculty member in Africana Studies, a research Associate in Northeastern’s Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy, and a volunteer champion for the 125 Campaign. Richard holds a PhD in Urban and Regional Studies from MIT and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering Systems from Howard University.

Assistant Vice President for University Equity and Compliance & Title IX Coordinator

Mark joined Northeastern University in January 2016. His primary role is to oversee the Office for University Equity and Compliance, which is responsible for keeping the university within compliance of federal law, coordinating the investigation and resolution of all reports of discrimination and spearheading prevention, training and education initiatives across the university. Mark has over 24 years of higher education experience and has overseen all facets of Student Affairs, including Residence Life, Student Conduct, Health and Counseling Services, New Student and Family Programs and Student Engagement.

Lisa Macedo (she/her) is a Senior HR Learning Partner at Northeastern University, where she has supported leadership development since 2017. In her role, she designs, facilitates, and evaluates impactful learning programs focused on managerial skill-building, coaching, and feedback. With a strong foundation as a former HR Business Partner, Lisa brings a strategic lens to her work, partnering with leaders to ensure learning initiatives align with organizational goals. She is especially passionate about creating practical, inclusive experiences and takes a collaborative approach to help managers grow in confidence and capability.

Jack McDevitt

Jack McDevitt

Professor of the Practice

Jack McDevitt is a Professor of the Practice Emeritus in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northeastern University. Jack was the Founding Director of the Institute on Race and Justice at Northeastern University. Jack is the co author of three books Hate Crimes: The Rising Tide of Bigotry and Bloodshed, Hate Crime Revisited: American War on Those Who Are Different (both with Jack Levin) and Victimology (with Judy Sgarzy). He has also co-authored about hate crime, racial profiling, police misconduct, gun violence and human trafficking including a national curriculum on hate crime developed to train law enforcement officers to recognize and respond to hate motivated violence. In 2014 he was appointed by the Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives to Chair a Gun Violence Commission to make recommendations on ways to reduce gun violence in the Commonwealth. He has testified as an expert witness before the Judiciary Committees of the US House of Representatives and in May of 2024 Jack gave the Keynote Address at White House conference Hate Crimes: Issues with Measurement and Impact on Victims :Advancing Understanding of Hate and Bias Incidents.

Learning & Employee Engagement Specialist

Mika Morikawa-Zhou (pronounced: Mee-kah Moh-ree-kah-wah Joe), is a specialist in organizational learning, development, and employee engagement. She is driven by the belief that organizations should work FOR people. At Northeastern, she developed the employee engagement core philosophy, spearheaded the reimagination and execution of the 2025 Staff Excellence Awards, and leads the Nourish Engagement initiative.

Mika holds a Master of Science in Corporate and Organizational Communication, with a focus in cross-cultural communication, and a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College. She identifies as Japanese/Asian American and a neurodiverse woman of color.

University Fellow

Robert (Bob) DeLeo is a University Fellow for Public Life at Northeastern University, where he teaches and mentors students in public policy, urban affairs, and legislation. A proud Northeastern alumnus, DeLeo served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for nearly 30 years, including over a decade as Speaker—the longest tenure in the state’s history. Known for his collaborative leadership style, he played a key role in advancing major reforms in criminal justice, gun safety, and economic development. Today, he brings his deep experience in public service to the classroom, helping students become thoughtful, effective civic leaders.

Meghan Elliott

Human Resources Business Partner

Meghan Elliott is a Human Resources Business Partner in University HR supporting the College of Professional Studies and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. Meghan’s work touches a number of areas but she is especially focused on leadership development, performance management, belonging, and employee engagement.

She believes that building trust and empathy in the workplace through effective communication are key indicators for employee performance, wellness, and retention. She holds a Master of Science in Nonprofit Management with a certificate in Human Resources Management from CPS! She has also been a certified Human Resources Professional through the Society of Human Resource Management since 2019.

Constance (Connie) Yowell, Keynote Speaker

Sr Vice Chancellor, Education Innovation

Dr. Constance M. Yowell is a nationally recognized leader in education innovation, with a career spanning research, philanthropy, technology, and higher education. She currently serves as a Researcher of Practice and Executive Director of the Center on the Future of Higher Education and Talent Strategy at Northeastern University. She previously served as Northeastern’s Senior Vice Chancellor for Education Innovation, leading a university-wide transformation of experiential learning, global programs, and career pathways.

Before joining Northeastern, Dr. Yowell was Executive Vice President at Southern New Hampshire University, where she helped pioneer a stackable, personalized learning system to increase access for first-generation and low-income learners. She was the founder and CEO of LRNG, a national nonprofit and digital platform that connected youth to learning and workforce opportunities through local ecosystems.

Earlier in her career, she directed the $250 million Digital Media and Learning initiative at the MacArthur Foundation, catalyzing a new field of connected learning and launching influential efforts such as the Open Badge movement, game-based learning, and 21st-century library and museum transformations.

Rominder (Romi) Singh

Professor of Practice, Regulatory Sciences & AI

Dr. Romi Singh is a highly accomplished thought leader in global drug development, multiregional clinical trials, and the application of AI/ML in regulatory sciences. Dr. Singh was appointed Professor of Practice at Northeastern University after a successful career at leading biopharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, Amgen, Merck, and GSK. He has successfully bridged the interfaces between drug discovery, development, manufacturing, medical & commercial. He is frequently sought out to facilitate policy discussions and drive effective interactions with health authorities to achieve positive outcomes. He founded GRA Advisors to advise on global regulatory strategies. Dr. Singh obtained his BSc (Hons) from St. Stephen’s College, a doctorate from the University of Kansas, and postdoctoral training from the University of Washington. He completed his certification from MIT in Artificial Intelligence and Business Strategy.

Dr. Umesh Hodeghatta

Assistant Teaching Professor, Roux Institute

Dr. Umesh R. Hodeghatta is a distinguished Engineer, Scientist, and Educator, currently serving as a faculty member for the Roux Institute at Northeastern University. With over 25 years of professional experience, he has held technical and senior management positions at esteemed organizations, including Wipro, McAfee, Cisco Systems, and AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dr. Hodeghatta specializes in AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Big Data Analytics, and Cyber Security.

He holds a master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. His research focuses on enhancing information security through AI and Machine Learning, Precision Agriculture and AI, Building Responsible AI, and he assists organizations with data-driven decision-making to achieve strategic and financial goals. He is also adept at building data science teams and fostering a data-driven culture within businesses.

John Wilder

Assistant Teaching Professor, Analytics & Applied AI

John Wilder is an assistant teaching professor of Analytics and Applied AI. His favorite course to teach is ALY6070 – Communication and Visualization for Data Analytics. In addition to teaching, John enjoys finding opportunities for students to practice their data analysis skills on real-world problems. For example, in Fall 2024 he helped run a data hackathon where students used cell phone mobility data to predict the flow of traffic in and around Toronto during large events, such as pop music concerts. John previously taught computer science with Khoury College and has worked as an independent contractor developing virtual-reality software. As a research associate at the University of Toronto, and before that as a postdoctoral fellow at York University, he conducted research at the intersection of human perception, cognitive neuroscience, and computer vision. John earned a PhD in Cognitive Psychology and an MS in Computer Science from Rutgers University.

Senior Manager, Leadership Development Programs - The Partnership

Originally from Bermuda, Lesley is an accomplished professional who has spent most of her career in both the hospitaliy and destination marketing industries. In 2022, she joined The Partnership as the Sr Manager, Leadership Development Programs and is responsible for the entire lifecycle of their signature leadership development programs.

Lesley’s interests include cooking, reading, wine tasting, and community service. She served Big Sister of Greater Boston for 10 years as a mentor and founding member of the organization’s Diversity Board, ending her service as Vice President. Lesley is a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda. Lesley is an alumna of the University of New Haven and holds a Certificate in Women’s Entrepreneurship at Cornell University in conjuction with Bank of America. Lesley’s greatest passion is travel to destinations like Morocco and South Africa.

Heidi Happonen is a seasoned strategic marketing and communications leader with over two decades of experience spanning academic, nonprofit, and corporate sectors. Recognized for her purpose-driven approach, Heidi excels in building and guiding diverse teams to deliver creative strategies that advance institutional goals, foster stakeholder relationships, and enhance organizational reputations. Currently serving as Senior Director of Communications at Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies, Heidi has previously led award-winning campaigns at Oregon State University and held leadership roles in both agency and corporate environments. As the founder of StoryForce, she has empowered Fortune 500 companies, NGOs, and academic institutions to harness the power of storytelling for impactful change. Heidi holds an MBA from Washington State University and a BA in English from Temple University.

Originally from Detroit, MI, David is a graduate of Indiana University-Bloomington (BA English) and Northeastern University (MEd Higher Education Administration, MS Organizational Communication) and career academic and student affairs employee in higher education. He is currently Associate Director for PhD Programs at the College of Arts, Media, and Design.

David enjoys supporting his colleagues in addition to his primary job responsibilities, having facilitated multiple professional development groups, and co-chairing the launch of an employee professional development affinity group (Northeastern University Future Leaders). He is pursuing a Doctorate of Education focused on identifying new ways to measure the mutual return on investment for employee participation in professional development.

David is a CPS alum (MEd ’18, MS ’20) and The Partnership fellow (’21).

Denise Reid is the Associate Director of Communications at Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies, where she leads strategic brand storytelling, social media engagement, that connect with a diverse, global student body. With over seven years of experience in digital marketing and communications, she brings a deep understanding of how to build authentic narratives that drive engagement and impact.Outside of higher education, Denise is the Founder of Purple Mango Co., a boutique marketing consultancy that specializes in culturally grounded content strategy and social media for purpose-driven brands. Her agency supports small to mid-sized businesses—particularly Black, Brown, and women-led ventures—in building strong digital identities rooted in trust, clarity, and culture.
A first-generation Jamaican-American and MBA graduate, Denise is passionate about inclusive storytelling, creative leadership, and empowering others to confidently share their vision with the world.

Magali Feruzi

Magali Feruzi

Associate Dean, Academic Affairs

Magali Feruzi serves as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs. A graduate of Gordon College in Social Work and Sociology, she joined CPS in 2011, and has worked in several capacities for the college, including: Director of Finance, Director of Operations and Partnerships for Sport in Society.

Prior to her work at Northeastern, Magali was a member of several community groups aimed at violence prevention within the city of Boston and Lawrence and has volunteered her time doing musical appreciation events for youth and senior citizens. Her commitment to the community extends to several other non-profit organizations, including the United Way of Mass Bay and Metro Lacrosse. She was also a founding staff member for the non-profit organization Boston After School and Beyond. In addition to her non-profit work, Magali has also worked in the medical field at Mass General Hospital and Whittier Street Health Center in the public health sector.

Magali brings a profound dedication to students, fostering an environment built on mutual respect, understanding, and integrity while also building a culture that allows individuals to leverage their unique talents and strengths that benefit learners and the broader academic community.


